Welcome Bonus FAQs
What is a credit card welcome bonus?+
A welcome bonus (also called a sign-up bonus) is a one-time reward you earn after opening a new credit card and meeting a minimum spending requirement within a set timeframe, typically 3 months. Bonuses can be worth hundreds of dollars in cash back, points, or miles.
How do I know when a welcome bonus is at its highest?+
We track bonus values over time and flag cards where the current offer is at or near the 12-month high. Look for the green 'BONUS AT HIGH' badge, which means now is a particularly good time to apply.
Do welcome bonuses change often?+
Yes. Issuers regularly adjust welcome bonuses based on competition, seasonal promotions, and business goals. Some cards see bonus changes every few months, while others stay stable for a year or more.
Should I wait for a higher welcome bonus before applying?+
It depends. If a bonus is currently below its historical average, waiting might pay off. But if the bonus is at a high, applying now locks in the best value. Keep in mind that bonuses can also decrease without warning.
How is the dollar value of a points bonus calculated?+
We use standard point valuations: cash back at face value, Chase Ultimate Rewards at 1.5 cents per point, Amex Membership Rewards at 1.5 cents per point, and airline miles at 1.2 cents per mile. Your actual value may vary based on how you redeem.
